For me, the key to Bikram lies in the idea that it is not only a physical exercise for an hour and a half stretch a few times a week, but a twenty-four-hour seven-day-a-week proposition. As I have approached the challenges of surviving and triumphing in class, so have I brought this sensibility to the rest of my life and watched it transform my world in myriad ways.
I live right around the corner from BYD, and I shop at Tom Thumb. A couple of years ago, I started noticing these people trudging down the stairs, looking like warriors fresh from battle. Their skin was shining and they looked so alive! I couldn't figure out what they were doing! Around that time, I took a week off from my very stressful job that keeps me out of town and crazy busy much of the time. I decided to figure out where those folks I saw were coming from, and the rest is history!
I am a self professed "girly-girl"--I came to the states from Hong Kong when I was six, and as I grew up, I was anything but athletic. I never exercised and I hated to sweat! During my first class I couldn't believe how hot it was and my shoulder was screaming from the second pose on. But after that week, I was hooked. Here was a place that cultivated not only physical growth, but mental and emotional strength as well. I find it fascinating that many of the poses I loathed in the beginning are now my favorites: I look at myself in the mirror and can hardly believe the progress I've made by following the sage advice of my teachers. I think of the BYD instructors not just as teachers but more as 'life coaches'. Some of the phrases that stick with me as I navigate my day are: "use your bulldog determination" and "if you fall down get right back in" and "let it go". Are there any better words to live by?
So now I attend class 3-5 times a week, and when I'm traveling, I often find a studio to visit. I know the same 26 postures will greet me in Houston, New York, or Chicago just as they do in Dallas, and I enjoy meeting new instructors and Bikram enthusiasts. As a 45 year-old who never exercised until Bikram, I am living proof of not only the power of this yoga, but the fact that anyone can do it! Just use your "bulldog determination" and everything else seems to fall in place.
