I recall the day I first discovered Bikram yoga: shopping at Tom Thumb, I saw two men with towels around their necks who had clearly just finished an incredible workout emerging, from an upstairs business that was so new there wasn't even a sign. Curious, I walked upstairs and discovered Bikram Yoga Dallas, a tiny, brand new studio. Honestly, I was dubious: I had never tried yoga before, and the class description seemed a bit daunting. But the energy at the studio was positive and welcoming, so I decided to give it a try. And after my first class, I was addicted. Now I'm definitely not saying it was easy! But my mind and body simply loved the challenge and thrill of accomplishment upon completing each class.

I got off to a tremendous start, but remaining committed proved difficult. After six months of dedicated practice, I let kids, husband, job, and "life" take over, allowing myself the excuse of "too busy" or "too tired" . I live close by and drove past the studio every day, watching wistfully as the studio grew and moved to its exciting larger space. As the weeks and then months slipped by, I felt scared to come back, that paralyzing fear of failure, but finally the memories of how fabulous I felt while practicing won out over my doubtful self talk. As of May last year, I recommitted myself, coming three times each week. Practicing consistently is a daily challenge; I know I have to stay rooted in the present in order to continue to grow, but I have also learned there are inevitable bumps along any path, and our response to those "breakdowns" is all that really matters. I agree with Bikram-- yoga is a lifetime practice-- it is never too late and you are never too old to start over.

To all prospective and new students, I say jump in! It will be difficult, but by taking baby steps each class, you will be astonished to feel yourself grow exponentially as you continually show up for the experience. I still see stars after balancing stick and feel dizzy after camel, but the vast improvement in my overall well-being is undeniable. I feel younger, happier, calmer--my body feels a freedom that instructs my every experience each day in my life.

Thank you to David and Karen for the beautiful studio. I am grateful to each of my instructors who each bring something unique to my practice. Thanks also to my fellow students, a daily inspiration. Finally, I thank my husband and kids who see first hand the positive impact Bikram Yoga Dallas has on my life, and who always say, "Don't worry about us, go to yoga!"
