Since January, 2006, my life has changed ten-fold. Not only did I take the enormous step of joining my husband's fast growing software company as Director of Business Development, I also walked into my first 5:30 am Bikram Yoga class. I had tried various styles of yoga before and was looking for an intense workout that would allow me to give up all other forms of exercise. I dreaded running, hated the drudgery of working with a personal trainer and did not consider myself particularly flexible; I knew, however, that my attitude towards exercise has always included pushing myself beyond limits. My biggest competitor is myself, my own mind, and on that first day after class, I was convinced I had finally found the exercise program that was truly a fit for me!
About two weeks after I began at BYD, the Bikram Challenge started. Already, I was so in love with this yoga practice. I had attended class five days my first week and six the second--joining the Challenge was the next logical step. On the day I committed to 6-7 days a week, I made a pact with myself that I would do 60 classes in 60 days. I remember imagining the thrill of achieving the goal, and I was ready to win. Yes, the commitment was incredibly tough, but I learned about myself exponentially. During these 60 days I pushed my mind, body, and spirit to places within myself I had not visited since childhood. Yoga became my friend and at times my enemy. Through the teacher's words, though, I began to truly listen to myself (yes you can do it) and feel myself changing. And finally, when the challenge ended and I had a few days to rest, I realized…there were so many ways to keep pushing myself I couldn't wait for the next class!
The lessons I have learned and continue to learn from Bikram yoga have been an asset to my personal and professional life. My life has changed remarkably over the last four months and just keeps getting better. I now know what it means to trust myself, get back in there when I fall out, push beyond my limits and most of all…persevere. Karen, David, Christina, Lauren, Teal, Erika and the 5:30 crew, thank you for your roles in guiding, motivating and encouraging this yogi warrior!
With gratitude,
